Planning a quick trip, mama? Nicole reviews Westin Siray Bay Resort & Spa

The chaos of the holidays is over, which quite possibly means you’re in need of a quick getaway to rejuvenate your ‘mummy powers’ for the year ahead. (We all know mama bears need all their energy to make it through another year of night waking, bottles and dirty diapers!)

Of course if you’ve already crossed more time zones than you’d care to count in the quest to see loved ones over the silly season, you probably want something less taxing on the travel front. Here’s where to take advantage of Hong Kong’s close proximity to a bevy of idyllic locations and book yourself a quick escape.

When you’re talking time out to refresh and recharge, it’s hard to beat the land of smiley, happy faces – Thailand. After checking out the far north earlier this year, we headed south to Phuket for a pre-Christmas mini-break.

HOW: Direct flights with Air Asia make it a fairly bearable three-and-a-half hour flight. That said, when it comes to flying with kids in tow, the stark reality is that you have to add on a few more hours for check-in and travel time to and from the airport. In total it took us seven hours from door-to-door.

WHERE: Westin Siray Bay Resort & Spa

A good 35-minute cab drive from the airport, this is not ideal with an over-tired toddler, but once you get there, I promise all your travel woes (along with that Hong Kong winter chill!) will fly right out of the window!

This is a five-star resort, and worth every cent. Set in a stunning location, the resort is perched high upon a hill overlooking a crystal clear blue ocean with its own private beach – mamas, once you’ve unpacked you literally don’t need to go anywhere else! We stayed put for four days, five nights, and while I initially thought this would be too short to properly unwind, how wrong I was!

THUMBS UP: Accommodation-wise, choose from sea view rooms with balconies to ground floor suites and villas, many with their own private plunge pool. There are three restaurants for wining and dining, and all are very child-friendly with highchairs, children’s menus, crayons and plenty of undivided attention from super-friendly staff (leaving mama to eat in peace!)

If you’re in the mood for a pre-dinner cocktail, my tip is to venture up the hill to watch the sunset over the ocean and make the most of happy hour at Splash bar. Bliss! Most nights, a musical duo does the rounds of the restaurants and bars, with a few tunes to add to the holiday vibe.

During the day, enjoy one of several exquisite pools, or meander down to the private beach (or do both… remember ladies, you’re on holiday!). There’s also a kid’s club with super-attentive and fun carers to entertain and educate your little ones while you relax and rejuvenate. Even better, just outside the kid’s club is the child-friendly Horizon Pool where – depending on your child’s age – you can stretch out on a deck chair or wade in the pool, and still see junior playing in the clubroom, until they’re ready to come out and join you for a dip!

Thumbail

THUMBS DOWN: Being spread across steep hills, golf buggies are your only real mode of transport to cruise the resort. Not ideal if you have a baby in a stroller who’s sleeping on and off!

Overall, the Westin Siray Bay Resort & Spa is pure holiday heaven, and perfect for a quick break to revitalise the spirit!
