Southside has long been a weekend and relaxation destination, but few would describe it as a fashion destination. Seed, one of Australia’s leading retailers, is trying to change this conception, and has just opened its first Hong Kong boutique featuring their Womenswear Collection in The Arcade at Repulse Bay.
As I walked by the shop after school dropoff nearly every day, I was intrigued to see what was in store. Being from The States, I was unfamiliar with the brand, and knew it only from the Seed Children’s stores on the island. I also wasn’t sure how it would translate to the stylish young women or hip mamas in HK, as the style (at least as it looked from the image on the store window as the renovation was being done) seemed something akin to Eileen Fisher – which I equate with women in their 50s and 60s with a penchant for scarves and “sack dresses”.
After attending the recent launch release party, I was so excited to find that I couldn’t have been further off base! Certainly, there are many casual, breezy items to be found, but not casual in an aged, frumpy sense – casual in a pulled-together, easy, seemingly effortless sense. I was lucky enough to speak to the designer at Seed, Karla Fitzpatrick, and she really focuses on the “everyday woman who still wants to look stylish”, with light fabrics perfect for Hong Kong, unique patterns designed in-house, and a wide range of textures from luxe cotton to buttery soft leather and fur. The collection on view is bang-on trend for this season’s layered styles.
Not everything is casual, either. There were some fantastic sequined shorts and several gorgeous tops that would be perfect for a night out, whether you’re 21 or 41. Seed didn’t scrimp on the finishing touches, either. Their accessories were a combination of leather, crystals, and beads, and depending on how you wear them they would work for day or evening. They have shoes on offer as well, and I will admit to having purchased a fabulous pair of suede platform heels that add several inches (I can use all the help I can get) without sacrificing comfort.
For all you mamas on the Dark Side, don’t despair – Fitzpatrick let me know that they will be opening another shop soon at the Peninsula. Also, a multi-storey space is in the works in Central. Seed is definitely a brand that has plans to take root in Hong Kong, and I have a feeling it will grow and grow!
