Tiny Bites: Alfresco Family Sunday BBQ Brunch at Hullet House

Fall is the PERFECT time of year for outdoor dining in Hong Kong… but sadly there aren’t too many alfresco options in our fair city, are there? One especially family-friendly spot to note, however, is The Stables Grill, nestled away in the lovely garden of the Hullett House, the heritage hotel oozing with Old World Hong Kong in Tsim Sha Tsui. Their newly offered Sunday BBQ brunch in the courtyard garden ticks all the right boxes.

 

Thumbs up for…

The combo of the cooler autumn air, charming garden setting, easy BBQ fare, and dedicated little area to keep the kids occupied make this sort of a no-brainer for a family lunch out. Kids can run around a bit within the (mostly) contained garden area and they’ve got a range of toys to keep them busy (play table with chairs, chalkboard, balls, a small baby slide, etc). And the colonial backdrop of the former marine police headquarters can’t be beat.

Thumbs down for…

By the very end of the day the kids area can look like a storm blew through it with crayons and toys scattered all over creation – which is to be expected after getting man-handled by loads of kiddies all day! Little J did not seem to mind though in the least and kept going back for more.

Kids Menu?

Yup. And it’s got all the kid-friendly items you’d expect and then some. Mini beef burgers, pizza, grilled corn on the cob, sausages, chicken/beef skewers, grilled veggies… plus yummy desserts. It was all a hit.

And for adults you’ve got yummy BBQ specialties straight off the grill – rosemary pork chops, Texan-style pork ribs, Mediterranean-grilled vegetables and lots more… My advice: go for the (nominal) add-on charge and tuck into the grilled steak, lobster or tiger prawns.

Highchairs?

Surprisingly, no. Though the staff was very accommodating with extra cushions to get our little one up to the table.  This also meant though that she was in and out… in and out… in and out from the table to the play area virtually the entire time!

Stroller Access?

As long as you are comfortable with a couple escalators from the street level to the hotel level you should be all set. (And there might well be elevators from the street level plaza up to the hotel as well.)

Price Range

The BBQ runs $288 for adults and $188 for children. For an additional charge ranging from $68-128 you can add US Prime Rib Eye, Australian lamb cutlet, grilled lobster, garlic Tiger prawns (which were YUMMMMM!), prime Angus strip loin and market-fresh fish. You can also get unlimited beverages – hubby will likely appreciated the flowing draught beer for two hours ($118), and kiddos can get unlimited soft drinks and fruit juice ($88). And you can also order a la carte off the menu if the full BBQ isn’t quite your thing.
