Because who doesn’t covet salon-worthy locks every day of the week!
We all know that feeling when you leave the hair salon with perfect hair, under no illusions that (despite your best efforts) it won’t look like that again until the next time you make an appointment. But thanks to the abundance of great hair-styling tools on the market, it’s now easier than ever to try to tame our locks quickly before the school run or as a quick fix before date night. So we thought we’d share the six hair-styling tools we’ve come to rely on – not all of these are designed to be worked into your daily routine, but can be used as and when needed. They don’t necessarily come cheap so, with Christmas just around the corner, it might be time to get those wish lists started!

How better to start a post about hair styling than by discussing the humble hairdryer! And we’re not just talking any old hairdryer. We’re talking about the much-hyped Dyson Supersonic, which has recently been re-engineered. For those of you who are fed up spending too long wrestling with a hairdryer that you can’t even remember when you purchased, maybe it’s time to consider an upgrade. We promise Dyson’s version won’t disappoint. In fact if you’re anything like us, you’ll be wondering how you’ve lived without its state-of-the-art V9 motor and intelligent heat control until now. Once you’ve tried it, there’s no going back!

This little styler is a great all-rounder because it can be used to straighten and smooth, wave or curl your hair, depending what takes your fancy on any given day. Its titanium plates make it incredibly lightweight and durable, and it uses far infrared heat (the temperature is fully adjustable) so it won’t zap your hair of all moisture. It helps that it’s a seriously good-looking product too. It comes in a range of options, but we particularly like this azure version. If you’re one of those mamas that leaves home in the morning and constantly worries about whether you’ve left the straighteners on, then this is the product for you as it can be set to automatically shut off after a time-lapse of your choice (in ten minute increments all the way up to 60 minutes).
Available online or in-store from Amika for $2,780
We couldn’t have a guide to the best hair stylers, without including GHD. Its straighteners were highly coveted when they first hit the market back in the early 2000s and haven’t waned in popularity since. But the range has now expanded to include all sorts of curlers, crimpers and stylers, and it’s its creative curl wand we find ourselves reaching for. It guarantees the perfect curling temperature of 185°C and includes clever sensors to make sure the heat is distributed evenly throughout its tapered barrel (there’s also an automatic sleep mode after 30 minutes). You’ll be able to create salon-style, long-lasting bouncy waves and natural-looking curls in no time!

Heated rollers may be a bit old school, but they’re still a great way to add some lasting volume or curl to your look. This ceramic set from BaByliss is a winner in our book (one of the Sassy Mama team even used them on her wedding day, ensuring her usually poker-straight locks held their style all day!). The rollers come in four assorted sizes, heat up quickly and there are clips and pins to hold them in place. To avoid burnt fingertips, make sure you just hold on to the edges of the roller as you wrap your hair round it. And we recommend using a heat protection spray first, too!

This is the tool for those of you who want to make styling as simple and quick as possible. The hot air brush dries your hair at the same time as smoothing, adding volume and lift. We like that you can tuck the brush in really close to your roots so you get the lift you require at the crown. There are several heat and speed settings so you can experiment with what works best for you. The brush itself is oval-shaped and doesn’t rotate so we didn’t have any issues with our hair getting tangled in it, as we’ve experienced with some other designs.

There are quite a few of these clever brushes on the market, designed to help you create a frizz-free look, but this little one has won itself all sorts of rave reviews from straight and curly-haired mamas alike. It describes itself as a cross between a straightening iron and a paddle brush and uses ionic technology to seal your hair cuticle, adding some extra shine as you style. You can adjust the temperature all the way up to 232°C and at a pretty reasonable price point, we think it’s worth a try. Just remember you can only use it on dry hair, so don’t be tempted to run it over wet locks.
