Looking for the perfect milkshake? We take shakes pretty seriously around here, so have found the very best in the city for you to try.
Chocolate, vanilla, Oreo, peanut butter, salted caramel, or even spiked, we’ve been on the hunt for the best shakes in the city. The criteria? Full of flavour, not too sweet, and oh-so thick and creamy, with a price that doesn’t mean we’ll be choosing milkshakes over dinner (though we wouldn’t be complaining!). We take shakes pretty seriously around here, and have found our favourites in Hong Kong. Whatever your flavour of choice is, here’s where to find the very best milkshakes in the city…
The shakes at Shake Shack (in our opinion) make the competition a little unfair. World renowned for its burgers and shakes, and a newcomer to Hong Kong, it’s always going to come out on top (hence, its name). If you’re after the thickest shake you can get your hands on, for a purse-friendly $42, this is where to go. Our personal favourite will always be the chocolate shake, but Shake Shack offers up all the classics (vanilla, caramel, black & white, strawberry, coffee), along with its 852-exclusive Milk Tea Shake, which we’re yet to get our hands on, but have been assured is just as good as the staples.

Another Hong Kong burger resto that serves up the goods when it comes to serious shakes is Beef & Liberty. Referring to its offering as Liberty Shakes (there is no milk in them, just three-scoops XTC gelato and a shot of cream!), you know you’re not going to be getting a luck-lustre, water-downed shake here. Although slightly pricier ($79 for classic, $89 for signature and $99 for spiked), you’re getting what you pay for. Go classic vanilla, or take it up a level (when the kids aren’t watching!) with the Southern Slur, made with bourbon, caramel syrup and vanilla gelato.

A favourite pit-stop for hungry HKU students, No Milkshake No Life, serves up everything from French toast and pancakes, to burgers, hot dogs and grilled cheese – along with its namesake, milkshakes. The fun and quirky resto guarantees drool-worthy food – just check out its Insta page – with milkshake flavours ranging from Chocolate + Peanut Butter, Coffee-Oreo, Banana and and Taro (all $42 foe 12oz, or $56 for 16oz). Though we may stay away from the Red Wine boozy shake, the Guinness Oreo, and the Almond + Caramel Baileys ($52/$66) have us more than tempted.

Contrary to popular belief, milkshakes can be made without copious amounts of dairy, and MANA! proves it. Serving up plant-based alternatives to our favourite foods, the Babylon Shake ($70) is a must try. Made with banana, figs, tahini, soy milk and cinnamon, it guarantees a flavor-packed and creamy vegan shake. What’s more, all packaging used at MANA! is 100% compostable and biodegradable, so you can enjoy a shake that’s good for you, and good for the planet!

As a go-to favourite for ice-cream in the city, you know you can count on Emack’s for a great shake. Choose from any of the award-winning ice-creams to make your perfect shake for $62. With the likes of Peanut Butter Oreo, Almond Coconut Bar, Salted Caramel Chocolate Pretzel and much, much more on offer, you and your brood may take a while to pick your poison. You can also opt to go for one of Emack’s non-fat frozen yogurts in your shake, if you’re looking for a slightly “healthier” option, or go for the Chocolate Peanut Butter Blast Smoothie, with non-fat chocolate fro-yo, banana, natural peanut butter and soy milk.

This late-night burger joint brings in the crowds for its juicy burgers, crinkle cut fries, cute vintage aesthetic and, of course, its shakes. With its diner-style vibe, shakes at Burger Circus are served in a tall glass with a cherry on top, so it’s serves Hong Kongers well for an Instagrammable photo-op. Classic flavours include Vanilla, Strawberry, Chocolate, Coffee and Salted Caramel ($68), or go for a candy shake (M&Ms, Kit Kat, Oreos, Reese’s Pieces, Marshmallow or Malt) for $78. Open late-night on weekends, if you happen to want to spike your shake, you’re more than welcome to add shot to it. Although not the thickest shakes going, Burger Circus is all about the diner experience, so head here for a taste of nostalgia.

If you’re out late one night with your partner or (on a Ladies Night Out), head to The Flying Pan and opt for a Buzzshake ($80) if you’re not looking to head home quite yet. We love the sound of the After 8 Chocolate Mint, with crème de menthe and crème de cocoa. After something a little more PG-rated? The classic shakes here ($50) are available in almost every flavour imaginable, from Banana, Oreo and Strawberry, to Mango, Matcha Green Tea and Coconut.
